From the Sketchbook: Goblins, Orcs, Uruks and Trolls !!

Here are a few pieces I've been working on just for fun and practice. They were all sculpted in 3D using a piece of free software called Sculptris Alpha 6, which is quite frankly, awesome! You can quickly get to grips with the tools and build up cool looking models in an hour or two. I took a screen grab of the models and imported them into Photoshop, where I proceeded to lay on textures and painted over them to get the finished results. The 3D really helps because the lighting is already decided, so you can get a finished piece really quickly.

This goblin freaked my kids out when they saw it, so I must have done something right!!

 A  tattooed goblin...

 Another tattooed goblin

A  Troll.....

 Another Troll.....

.....And a Peter Jackson LotR inspired Uruk Hai.

Below you can see the sculptris models I used as reference:

All pieces are copyright David Griffith Illustration 2014.

Tha Work Thang #45: Star Wars Age of Rebellion.

I was lucky enough to have a couple of pieces printed in Fantasy Flight Games' "Star Wars: Age of Rebellion Roleplaying Game." The piece you see here is of a Temple class heavy freighter, showing deck levels for passengers, cargo, prisoner transport and hazardous waste transport. I received my comp copy of this the other day, it is a monster of a book, over 460 pages and beautifully presented. It was a real pleasure to be involved in a franchise such as Star Wars.

Tha Work Thang #44: Tome of Decay

Here are a couple of pieces from Fantasy Flight Games' new release for their Black Crusade RPG, the Tome of Decay. This celebrates all things Nurgle, who for the uninitiated is the Chaos God of Decay and so the book is chock full of icky gooeyness and putrescent plagues. Great for drawing lots of textures like rust and rotten wood.

Tha Work Thang #43: More Foul Play!!

Going for shock and awe treatment now, three posts in two days, the world has gone crazy!

As a supplement to my previous "Foul Play" art, here we have the Bloodbowl Referee. This uncompromising individual has the unenviable task of keeping things in order on the pitch and if anyone disagrees with his point of view they can take it up with the point of his stick!

It is taken from Fantasy Flight Games', "BloodBowl: Team Manager" card game.

Tha Work Thang #42: Game of Thrones Ancestral Home.

What's this? My posts are like London buses, you wait an age for one to turn up and then two come at once!

Here we have three of the six card art pieces I did for Fantasy Flight Games' "Game of Thrones" L.C.G. (that is Living Card Game for you uninitiated out there.) based on the famous books of George R.R. Martin.

These are from the Ancestral Home Chapter pack, (the box of which can be seen below.) The pieces were meant to incorporate imagery that is instantly identifiable with the houses within the story, i.e. the Lannister Lion. As I have been a big fan of the books for many years it was a joy to work on these.

Tha Work Thang #41: Warhammer 40K Cover Art

Here are three pieces of cover art done for Fantasy Flight Games' range of Warhammer 40 Thousand Roleplaying games. They all went through various stages of development, either being embellished more or stripped back to be simpler. The Tau piece in particular had far more going on initally but eventually a simpler piece was chosen.
